Blog: The Schock Report: Rep. Schock and Sen. Rubio Team Up

Statement

Date: June 20, 2013

Dear Friends,

This month, Senator Marco Rubio and I teamed up to introduce legislation to streamline an important section of the tax code.

The Higher Education and Skills Obtainment Act aims to update and consolidate America's higher education tax incentives into one provision while continuing to help millions of Americans pursue their dream of a higher education.

Our legislation will save nearly $4 billion annually by eliminating credits that currently go to taxpayers who aren't students or didn't attend an eligible institution. At a time when every dollar counts, it's critical that taxpayers know how every dollar is spent.

An important aspect of the legislation is that it will open up support for Americans seeking skills training as an alternative to attending a college or university. Attending a traditional four year college or university is not part of everyone's career path, yet right now that isn't fully recognized by the tax system. Our bill would include getting approved job skills training in lieu of college as part of this education tax incentive.

The last two and half years I have been actively engaged in Congress' effort to reform the 70,000 page tax code. Whether you are a parent trying to help your son or daughter explore assistance to pay for their higher education or a student yourself trying to navigate the jargon and numerous education tax provisions, the current tax system has become a deterrent to all those seeking assistance.

The Rubio-Schock legislation aims to fix one part of our tax code, and in the process, we hope this will further the debate about the need to reform the outdated tax system.

Respectfully,
Aaron

P.S. Efforts are ongoing to investigate the illegal activity behind the IRS's targeting of conservative leaning organizations.
